Harvey Probber is a legendary American designer best known for pioneering modular seating and helping define mid-century modern interiors. Beyond furniture, he was also a cabaret performer and entertainer at heart (aren’t we all?), which perhaps explains the sense of hospitality and flexibility embedded in his designs. Operating a furniture factory out of Fall River, Massachusetts while performing professionally, Probber was a true Renaissance man. By the early 1950s, he had become one of America’s leading modern furniture designers, with work featured in the landmark 1951 Good Design exhibition at Museum of Modern Art. Though he eventually sold his company in the 1980s as tastes shifted, renewed interest in mid-century design has sparked a revival of his legacy. Still, original vintage pieces like this remain the gold standard for collectors. This Harvey Probber–attributed expandable dining table reflects his signature emphasis on function, modularity, and understated elegance. The table extends with four leaves and features drop-leg supports at either end to ensure stability when fully expanded—an ingenious blend of engineering and style. For collectors of vintage mid-century modern furniture, this modular dining table offers timeless design, architectural simplicity, and exceptional versatility.
